Network, Learn & Live to the Fullest: Anya M.’s Mentorship Lessons

When you intern at Mr. Cooper Group, you are paired with a mentor who will provide you with valuable insights and tips to aid in your career journey. Employer Brand Intern Anya M. shares about her mentor experience and how it helped her to succeed during a 10-week program.

How would you describe our company culture?

Mr. Cooper’s company culture is like no other! It truly amazes me to see that the company puts so much emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I have worked in many other corporate environments, and I am genuinely surprised by the amount of diversity within the company. It is nice to see that a company like Mr. Cooper is going out of its way to break these barriers.

Have you ever had a mentor before? If not, can you elaborate on your previous experience(s)?

Yes, I have had a mentor before. She was assigned to me during one of my internships back in 2021. I was so lucky to have her be someone I could work alongside with on a marketing team. She provided me with useful tips and skills that have helped me to thrive in other marketing roles. To this very day, we still manage to stay in contact with each other.

What was the most rewarding aspect of having a mentor at Mr. Cooper?

One of the most rewarding aspects of having a mentor was being able to get career advice from someone who has years of experience in the corporate world. Although my mentor is in an entirely different field than me, she has still been able to provide me with valuable tips that I’ll be able to take with me as I continue to grow into my career. I think that Mr. Cooper offering this as a resource to interns is amazing because I have been able to learn so much within this 10-week period.

What challenges did you encounter and how did your mentor help you overcome them (if any)?

One of my main challenges was finding enough time to do my day-to-day intern activities while attending multiple meetings throughout the day. Toniqua gave me with the advice to block off certain days or times on my calendar to dedicate to getting my work done. I’ve had no issues with meeting my deadlines ever since.

Enlightening

What lesson(s) did you learn from your mentor/mentee relationship?

My mentor stressed the importance of living your life to the fullest. This means finding as many opportunities as possible to socialize, have fun, and try new things. I’ve always been someone who liked to stay cooped up in the house and not really do much. Now I try my best to at least go out every weekend and do something fun with my friends/family. Life can be very unpredictable, and you never know when it may be your last moment on this earth.

What advice would you give any future/current interns at Mr. Cooper?

Do not be afraid to network and make connections with everyone at the company. Everyone here is very approachable, and I have never in a million years felt intimidated by anyone on the team. One of the very first things that I did when I joined the company was connect on LinkedIn with the individuals who I would be working with on a day-to-day basis. It is always great to make long-lasting connections because you never know if down the line that connection could be the reason, you’re able to get your foot in the door on a future opportunity.
