What Would You Say?: Blinne B. Talks Mentorships & Office Communication

At Mr. Cooper, we make it our priority to give our interns a well-rounded experience. This includes providing them with real-world experience and assigning mentors who can offer useful career advice. Default Servicing Intern Blinne B. shares insights into her mentee experience.

How would you describe our company culture?

I would describe our company culture as open, inclusive, and welcoming, while also fostering an environment for personal and professional growth and development. The employees here go out of their way to let you know you can come to them with questions or for help. Everyone builds each other up which helps to keep the work environment incredibly positive throughout. I believe that Mr. Cooper’s company culture has also contributed to my successes because I know that I can approach people without feeling as though I’m being a bother.

Have you ever had a mentor before? If not, can you elaborate on your previous experience(s)?

I have not had any other mentor experiences prior to my experience at Mr. Cooper.

What were the most rewarding aspects of having a mentor at Mr. Cooper?

Of course, you always apply what you learn while working toward your career development, but to sit down and have time dedicated to focusing on understanding myself in a professional capacity was extremely rewarding. I would come to meetings with questions for my mentor Joe, and he would do a great job answering them. He often took things a step further and urged me to look inward and think about how I would handle certain situations. Doing so allowed me to see what some of my strengths and weaknesses are.

What challenges did you encounter and how did your mentor help you overcome them (if any)?

I had a few meetings that went over the scheduled time, and I did not want to be rude and cut off the person speaking. However, it started to become a recurring issue and I knew I needed to speak up.  I asked my mentor Joe how to handle this situation and he gave me some great advice. He said to wait until there was about 10 minutes left and give the person a heads up when they come to a natural pause after finishing a thought.

Choose one word to describe your 2022 mentee experience.

Priceless!

What lesson(s) did you learn from your mentor/mentee relationship?

I learned a lot of great lessons during my mentorship. One particularly helpful lesson was how to communicate effectively. It is important to be concise and get straight to the point. People are always busy, so the quicker you can convey your message, the better it is. Additionally, you have to know when a message is best conveyed in an email, call, or meeting. If there is a lengthy email chain with a long response time in between each message, it is an indication that a meeting may have been more beneficial to move the conversation along. On the other hand, some meetings are not necessary and can easily be replaced by a short email.

What advice would you give any future/current interns at Mr. Cooper?

Take advantage of all the resources Mr. Cooper provides you! The Homegrown Team works really hard to make sure there are plenty of opportunities for us interns to learn and grow. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and ask them to meet one-on-one. Even if it is only for 15-30 minutes, you can learn so much and gain a lot of insight from meeting with people. If there are certain opportunities you want, just ask. People want to see you succeed, so if they can aid in that then they will. My last piece of advice is to network! Add people on LinkedIn, reach out to other interns, and build relationships!
