#MyHBCU Spotlight with Jeremy Brooks: Carrying on a Family Tradition

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

This Black History Month, we’re taking time to spotlight Mr. Cooper team members who are graduates of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). For Home Advisor Jeremy Brooks, being a part of his HBCU, Grambling State University, is a family tradition. He followed in the footsteps of his grandparents, who were both professors at Grambling, and his parents who graduated and worked there. Read on to find out how Grambling influenced the person he is today and his advice for HBCU students.

What is your biggest takeaway from your college experience as it relates to your current role? How has the experience shaped the person you are today?

The lesson I learned is to make do with what you have. At that time I attended Grambling, it did not have the best facilities and didn’t always have the best resources. We had to make the best of what we had and not use that as an excuse to not put our best foot forward. I continue to use these lessons in my everyday life and career.

What advice would you give HBCU students who are new to the workforce or about to join?

Always present yourself as a professional. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Utilize all the skills and lessons you learned along the way.

What is your favorite part about working at Mr. Cooper?

The culture and the team environment. We are all willing to help one another and we cheer each other on.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a month when the world reflects on the extraordinary things that Black people have invented or things that we have accomplished on our journey. Although we have made some great strides, we still have so much more to do and conquer.
