So You Think You Want To Be a Leader? A Development Program for Aspiring Leaders

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Our Talent Management team launched our So You Think You Want To Be a Leader initiative earlier this year—a new six-month development program designed to help mold aspiring leaders. Eligible team members were given the opportunity to apply and interview for the program. Through a structured selection process, 32 candidates were chosen and have been given the opportunity to learn leadership essentials and immediately apply key learnings.

Participants attend virtual training courses, complete coursework, and meet with a small group co-led by a team coach and program mentor. Kristina Berck, Executive Principal for Servicing Risk & Compliance, shares what she’s been able to take away from the experience.

Why did you decide to apply to the SYT program?

While I had managed small teams in past positions, with my goal of leading a department someday, I wanted to expand my knowledge and skills in leadership, so I could be an effective leader for the company and instill in others a drive to be successful in their careers. The program seemed like a great opportunity to learn more about what successful leaders do and how they think, and how to incorporate that into who I am as a person and future leader.

What kind of leader do you aspire to become?

A leader that really instills in others a drive to succeed, no matter what level they may be at—whether that’s brand new to the workforce or a seasoned veteran. Someone that is seen as open and trustworthy, professional, and reliable, and that shares their knowledge and experience, and is truly engaged with the whole team. I want to inspire others.

What have you enjoyed most about the program?

The engagement from the other participants and the mentor for the small group has been what I’ve enjoyed most. It has been so rewarding to hear other people’s thoughts and opinions on what we are learning together as future leaders. And our mentor has shared wonderful insights and practical advice from her experience.

What do you see as your ultimate career goal as it pertains to leadership?

My ultimate career goal is to become a Chief Compliance Officer for a company in the financial services industry.

Are there leaders in your personal life and/or your career who have inspired you?

While not a leader as some would see it, but for me, Dolly Parton is an amazing leader. Coming from next to nothing to become the success she is today is an eminently powerful message, especially for young girls and women. Her actions and beliefs have built not only a successful company but inspired countless people, especially when it comes to things that promote equality, such as literacy for all children regardless of class, ethnicity, or gender. And getting people to believe in what you are doing and asking of them to do it as well is a core factor in being a successful leader.
