Celebrating Black History Month: Demarcus Brewer on His Heritage and the Legacy He Hopes To Leave Behind

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

We have much to learn from each other, and each February during Black History Month, we are given the opportunity to honor, celebrate, and reflect on the achievements of Black people and the history and culture of the Black community.

Demarcus Brewer, AVP First Line of Defense (FLOD) and member of PACE, our Pan-African Coopers Empowered employee resource group, shares lessons he’s learned throughout his life and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

It’s an intentional month of reflection on the persons of color who’ve paved the way for the future—their sacrifices, the adversity they had to overcome, and their willpower to succeed!

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?

I want to be known as a God-fearing man who makes the most of every day (“lessons and blessings”), a man who smiled through it all (find a positive in every situation), willing to serve (not being afraid of giving back and being thankful). A man who always knew to put FAMILY FIRST!!

How has it impacted you to work in an environment where your diversity and heritage is celebrated?

It has been truly a blessing to see the growth of diversity and inclusion that the company has strived for. I remember when it was not “popular” to speak about Black History Month, and to see the transformation has been mind-blowing.

What is the most significant lesson you’ve learned from your life experiences thus far?

  1. Give yourself grace (accept that you’re not perfect)
  2. Always give thanks in every situation (GROW through it, don’t just GO through it)
  3. Don’t be afraid to fail (be willing to take risks!)

What music/literature/art means the most to you when it comes to your heritage?

The freedom to express myself freely through dance and poetry is one of the best things I love about my culture. We have a unique culture where I feel free of judgment and pressure of life through music/art because there is no right or wrong answer. It’s the expression of how you feel without needing an explanation. Pure FREEDOM!
